What is a Model UN conference?

A Model United Nations conference is an academic simulation in which students research an assigned country, organization, or role; debate a committee topic; negotiate with other delegates; and help write resolutions or directives. At HTSMUN VI, the conference is designed for middle- and high-school delegates, including first-time participants.

What happens at Model UN?

A typical committee moves between formal speeches, collaborative caucuses, writing, negotiation, and voting. Delegates learn to support their ideas with research, listen closely, and work toward practical language with others.

  2. Speak: present priorities in formal debate and respond to other delegates.
  3. Collaborate: meet in caucus, build coalitions, and refine solutions.
  4. Write and vote: contribute to resolutions, amendments, or crisis directives.

How do I prepare?

  2. Research your role: learn its interests, policy positions, and credible sources.

First Model UN conference checklist

Before the day

  • Confirm your registration, assignment, and conference schedule.
  • Read your background guide and bring concise research notes.
  • Prepare a short opening speech and a few concrete policy ideas.
  • Review committee expectations, conduct guidance, and any submission deadlines.

During committee

  • Listen for the agenda, speaking format, and chair instructions.
  • Introduce yourself early to delegates with compatible priorities.
  • Take notes on proposals and ask questions when procedure is unclear.
  • Contribute specific, workable language to the group’s documents.

For first-time delegates: confidence comes from participation, not from having a perfect speech. A clear question, a researched point, or a useful sentence in a draft can move debate forward.
